Cally is a landscape designer who has created a large country garden that requires only the minimal amount of care.
The ‘Merrinehbek’ garden has grown over 17 years to now be two acres of garden rooms, sweeping lawns, long shrub beds, and vistas out to the farm on which it sits. The careful selection of plants means that it is mostly self-sustaining.
The framework to this garden is very much the large specimen trees that were planted over 50 years ago. These include massive Oaks, Eucalypts, Ash trees, Liquidambars as well as an impressive avenue of mature Cypress trees lining the driveway.
Visitors will firstly enter through a large circular lawn surrounded by topiarised flowering Crab-Apple trees. Beyond this is another circular garden featuring a handsome 50 year-old weeping Elm surrounded by formal beds of layered hedges. The rooms then open up to more informal areas that blend with the countryside beyond.
All the garden areas feature beds of low maintenance shrubs that provide a year round theme of ‘green-on-green’ that is maintained in-between family time and work commitments. Other features include the fully netted vegetable- garden and a newly constructed outdoor Tuscan-style entertaining area.
