The only thing in the garden when we arrived in 1986 was a wisteria on one of the verandah posts, which has since passed away.

So I set to with a crowbar and started digging holes. My first attempt was a garden full of natives which cost about 10 years in wasted time until my passion and foray into gardening bloomed and the passion grew. The natives have given way to wide, deep garden beds filled with roses, sedum, euphorbia, liriope, camellia and day lilies, crepe myrtles (my favourite), lots of perennials and mature trees such as elms.

The most captivating part of the garden is looking out over the ha ha to the Cathedral Mountain in the distance. There is nothing planted along this front lawn to impede the view so the feel is as if the valley below is coming right up into the garden.

In 2017, we decided to develop the garden further into what was the boys horse paddock. The challenge here was again the soil and the slope. What has now developed are two huge batters filled with rosemary, perovskia, loropetalum, buddleia and teucrium.

Issues faced are wind, poor soil and rocks. Lots of mulch and compost are added to combat this and the lack of shade.

There is nothing better after a hard days work in the garden than to take a leisurely stroll around with a glass of something cold in hand.

Parking at top of driveway.

The Alexandra & District Open Gardens Weekend has been running since 1990 and these are some of the best reasons to consider coming up to Alexandra and the district this October.
