Garden #8
Liz & John Hunt
I love the evolving nature of the garden – there is always something new to dream about and plan, even if it comes after losing a tree or shrub due to storm – it becomes an opportunity to plant something new.

'Cathedral Gardens'
'Cathedral Gardens' is set at the foot of the Cathedral Ranges. Over 25 years, the area has evolved from farmland with only a few mature trees, into a beautiful space with many different exotic and native trees and shrubs.
I have planted roses, camellia, azalea and magnolia close to the house, so I always have a lovely view from my kitchen window. There is a large pond with waterlilies, fish and a good population of frogs. There is a wisteria arbour, a vegetable garden and large orchard. The berry patch, which has raspberries, boysenberries and a large thornless blackberry. Some areas of garden are watered in summer with a computerised system – the west facing lawn, the rose garden, the orchard and the vegetable garden. All new plantings are watered regularly for one year, they are then on their own (unless it’s a special tree).
The garden is especially lovely in spring, with a flowering crab-apple walk, weeping cherry trees, Manchurian pear and many other blossoming trees. In autumn, after a few cold nights, the liquid amber trees lining the driveway are ablaze with red and gold. The garden is a peaceful place to sit and relax and enjoy listening to the many varieties of birds that visit.
