The Attunga Gardens are a combination of visions - from previous owners who planted the magnificent 13 English elms to the current owners who engaged and worked with renowned landscape architect, Paul Bangay.

Paul was engaged in 2003 when the current owners purchased the property.  Paul’s mandate was to create a haven of tranquility, privacy, and semi formality. There is no doubt he has met and exceeded the expectations.

The garden has been structured to incorporate the 13 English Elms and other existing trees within the garden space. The formality and privacy is achieved through the creation of garden rooms.  These ‘rooms’ offer different vistas for different seasons and times of day. The formality is also achieved through the planned axis of the garden being the house, the two main water features and the pergolas that link different areas of the garden.

Paul and the owners researched plants that would thrive in the area - our cold winters and hot summer months that we experience. The mass plantings of Agapanthus, Crab Apples, Dogwoods, Magnolias, Daphne together with Hellebores, Snowball plants and Camilla dominate the garden beds.

In 2020 a decision was made to extend the garden toward the ‘pavilion pond’ and to move the driveway to the far side of the pond.  This gives this pond the opportunity to truly be part of the garden. The deep and welcoming garden beds of perennials as well as more Dogwoods, Rhododendrons and Camillas. Water Lillies now dominate the pond and this continues to provide a stunning habitat for birdlife.

Also added in 2023 is the formal vegetable garden - centred by a large berry cage inspired by Hougton Hall in the UK. The vegetable garden is book-ended by flower picking areas adorned with roses, perennials, annuals and bulbs of all varieties.

The owners have been bee keepers since 2017 and have noticed a dramatic increase in the productivity of the garden.

The garden continues to evolve and is developed and preserved by Head Gardener Heidi Grotaers and her assistant Jess Gilbert. The owners actively work in the garden and it remains a family legacy they look to pass to the next generation.
